Innovative Program Combines Robotics, Python Programming and Wireless Communication

We've released the first 28 pages of foundational tutorials for middle school and high school students studying cybersecurity. The new curriculum, part of our overall cyber:bot series, provides a student-coded experience in Python to demonstrate hardware-level basic security. The first tutorials require only two micro:bit modules:

  • Computer - Micro:bit Talk — Using the on-line Python editor to communicate with the Micro:bit in REPL and serial terminal, so you can send messages, process answers and display results.
  • Dictionary Primer — Learn how to organize your data as key-value pairs for efficient RF communication.
  • Cybersecurity: Radio Basics — Exchange text messages between two Micro:bits using a bidirectional texting application.
  • Cybersecurity - Radio Data — Exchange data packets with key-value pairs using Python's dictionary and string features.

The next set of tutorials will include many that also require a cyber:bot. You'll be able to take wireless control of an entire classroom of cyber:bots from a single computer. We will show how to secure the system with key shift encryption and channel IDs. Simple attacks, denial of service, and replay attacks can all be coded and demonstrated with the tutorials. We will continue to publish more cybersecurity tutorials through summer. Here is a sneak peek at what is in the works:
